Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren Placed Under House Arrest Amid Tribal Protests

The Jharkhand Police have placed former Chief Minister Champai Soren under house arrest as a precautionary measure due to protests led by tribal organizations against land acquisition for a state health institute.

According to the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Ranchi City, the decision to confine Soren was made to ensure public order amidst the ongoing demonstrations by Adivasi groups.

Soren criticized the action, labeling it as 'undemocratic' and asserting that it stemmed from his backing of the Adivasi community and their protests.

On August 30, 2024, Soren transitioned to the Bharatiya Janata Party, just two days after departing from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Earlier, on February 2, 2024, he assumed the role of chief minister following the resignation of Hemant Soren, who stepped down after being detained by the Enforcement Directorate in a money-laundering investigation.

Champai Soren later resigned on July 3, 2024, shortly after the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Hemant Soren.
